And in other sales-related news

A pal who's a partner at a big-city law firm gets frequent requests from people who want "'five minutes' to pitch their crappy legal services."

The latest came today:

Hi [redacted],

I am planning on being at the firm tomorrow afternoon to introduce myself. I am a Business Development Manager at [redacted] Reporting Corp., a worldwide court reporting and trial presentation company.

I have a little something for you and would like to say a quick hello. Please let me know if you will be around?

I hope to see you!

Best,

Jennifer

Nothing wrong with that, right? Except, her auto signature contains this photo (or is it an oil painting?):

Sez my pal the recipient: "I’m tempted to respond, 'Sorry, I’m married,' just to elicit her faux outrage that I interpreted her message as anything other than an innocuous invitation to pitch her business."

A news release cover note received on a rainy Wednesday morning

05.04.2011 by David Murray // 3 Comments

Hi David,

Did you have any interest in talking to Kimberly Kreines about winning the  2011 Writers Boot Camp First Year Development Deal for her screenplay, Shifted, adapted from her science fiction novel entitled Seer?

Wisneski will spend the next six-to-twelve months working in collaboration with WBC staff and faculty as well as the development partner, revising and editing her screenplay for the big screen.

She’d be happy to discuss!

Thanks,
Kathy

Yeah, I bet she'd be happy to discuss, I grumbled as I hit delete.

Police superintendent no job for a marble mouth

As Chicago Mayor-Elect Rahm Emanual stood nodding in the background, interim police superintendent Terry Hillard addressed the question of how Chicago will respond to the raised threat-level in the wake of the assassination of Osama bin Laden:

"Some of the units have been—the heightened alert has been heightened a little more when it comes down to that. (We've) taken the mood—a couple specialized units and there are some critical assets and we'll just wait and see."

Interim superintendent, indeed.
