Writing Boots

On communication, professional and otherwise.

They don’t write ’em like this anymore

06.24.2009 by David Murray // 3 Comments

The schoolteacher wife is off for the summer, which means a major household reorg. Out of the domestic dust storm came my late mother's portfolio from her advertising copywriter days back in the mid-1960s.

How about this public-service ad headline, over a soft-focus photograph of a sleeping child:

If you feel sure civil rights
is moving fast enough,
try to imagine your children waking up
Negro tomorrow morning.

not sure, but it seems like you’re painting your wife as the homemaker, spring cleaning type. thanks for that, i needed a good laugh today…
anyway, did your mom write that headline/article? i love it and would love to be able to know her today.

k bosch, that’s what she’s been this summer. It’s been refreshing! Jarring, but refreshing!

I’d have liked to know your Mom too David – mainly because she said [in a time when it just “wasn’t done”] things like “Fuck ’em if they can’t take a joke!”
I’m pretty sure I’d love your Mom almost as much as I love mine!!
