Ever heard of Steve Goodman?

You should know him; he wrote “City of New Orleans.” He died young, of leukemia, but he could make a guy’s roof leak. Especially a guy with a real leaky roof. The Murrays are off today to Ohio to see Granddaddy, back Monday.

Ellen: That’s the greatest, isn’t it? What a charming guy this Goodman was.

The most grab-your-emotions-and-throw-them-under-a-steamroller song Steve Goodman ever wrote was “When My Rowboat Comes In,” which he recorded about 13 months before he died. It is simultaneously a song of optimism and his epitaph. It WILL make you cry. Fortunately, if things get too sad, you can just skip over to “Watching Joey Glow,” on the same album (“Affordable Art”).
