I've been in Ohio for two weeks of accompanying my dad through some heavy medical tests. I'm heading back to Chicago this morning.
Here's an account of my stay here.
I have mixed feelings about sharing all this, yes.
But hell.
Right?
On communication, professional and otherwise.
Kristen says
David – I thought your account was just the right mix of facts and feelings.
And isn’t that what we writers DO? We, because of who we are, process and handle our life experiences, to a large extent, by writing about them, whether or not we choose to share them with others, though the feedback and reactions that come from sharing can be very helpful.
Regardless, know that the thoughts and prayers of your readers are with you, your Dad, and your family in this tough time.
Susan says
David,
If you can’t share with friends or colleagues, then what good are we? As Kristen said, your family is in our thoughts and prayers. You are going through a difficult time and it sucks. But we are here for you.
David Murray says
Thanks, guys. Kristen, as you know my dad’s a writer too and it’s one of my few remaining wishes that he finds a way to make meaning by making words in the time he’s got left.
Craig Jolley says
David, sorry to hear about your dad. Lucky stroke that he/you didn’t suffer too much in the aftermath of Ohio’s windstorm (we lived without power for 5 days…kind of fun actually).
I recently was moved to read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. Would this be something your dad might find valuable?

Good for you for finding fun in that, Craig; had I been free to do so, I would have been running from neighborhood to neighborhood reporting on social miracles I knew must be happening there.
Dad’s seen “The Last Lecture.” But thanks very much for the suggestion; perhaps it might be entirely different if he saw it again now. I’ll suggest it.
