Studs Terkel died at 96, and it was too soon, because nobody had replaced him yet as a friendly, funny, fierce defender of humans being humans.

But he lives on well enough through the fine new HBO documentary "Listening to America," and even better, through "Working With Studs," a new radio documentary by his brilliant and loving collaborator Sydney Lewis.
