I got up before dawn and drove from Chicago to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to see if the college that my daughter Scout attends and plays soccer for, Ohio University, could pull out a win against a longtime nemesis, Bowling Green.
I got there in time to say hello before warm-ups. After a long and difficult season that saw her confidence come and go (and come and go, and come and go again), Scout seemed in a good frame of mind.
But after a half, OU was down 1-0, pretty much as expected.
They came out live in the second half and Scout’s classmate Rayann Pruss tied the game at 1-1.
Soon after, Scout got her shot.
I hope they win the championship game Sunday (against my alma mater, Kent State) … but I don’t really care.
The idea. That young women. Working together. Could hang together through all of this. Is one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in this life.
(And I’ve seen some inspiring things.)
Saying this now: Thank you Scout. Thank you Bobcats. Thank you women athletes. Thank you women. For giving me the one and only thing in my life that’s actually (maybe) made me a better man.
