MLK Day Photo Essay: I see broken things, which is better than not seeing them

01.18.2021 by David Murray // Leave a Comment

Just last week on my runs through Humboldt Park, Chicago, U.S.A.:

I’m comforted to know many other people are noticing, and mourning, too.

A speechwriter asked me last week for advice on how to possibly write a positive MLK Day message at this low ebb.

I suggested a message about how this has seemed like the worst of years when it comes to social justice and race—but maybe it will be looked back on as the best of years, a watershed coming to terms not seen since Martin Luther King.

And whether it will or won’t, comes down to each and every one of us, and the depth of our hearts and the breadth of our minds and, to borrow a phrase, the content of our character.
