Friday Happy Hour Video: RIP Marilyn Moats Kennedy, Tough-Loving Career Advisor

03.10.2017 by David Murray // Leave a Comment

I just learned that Marilyn Moats Kennedy died earlier this year. She was a Chicago-based career consultant, a longtime Glamour magazine career columnist, and frequent conference speaker who could deliver provocative advice in the most self-assured tone.

"If you don't have 100 people in your Rolodex who will call you back in 24 hours, you're not going anywhere," she would tell audiences of wide-eyed communicators. I think she figured a little fear would help motivate people to broaden their networks. Anyway, I loved to interview her.

And so it’s nice to listen to her talk in this video, where she concludes, in her Kathy Bates-like tone, with some truth about work-life balance: "I don't think balance exists, to be frank. I used to think so. I used to think you could have it all. You can, but not all at one time.”

And speaking of work-life balance, here's the last word.
