When I attended Mike Long's Professional Speechwriters Association seminar, "Strategic Speechwriting: The Method and the Art," last spring in Chicago, I bragged on it and encouraged you to attend one of his remaining shows. I just attended another—this a private session for the communication crew at a big West Coast company—and I found myself enjoying it even more. Who walks into a corporation and says things like this?
"Content will get you absolutely nowhere in this business."
"She came back again and again because I wasn't just cranking out words. I was a professional friend."
"We're wet machines, people."
"Cynicism is mastery!"
"Love is a torture tool."
"This doesn't have to be art. But it'll sound like art if you approach it like a business."
You may not be able to tell from here what Mike means by those things, but you know there's plenty of rare wisdom in each one. Catch Mike in Atlanta Dec. 1-2, or in Washington, a new city we've added to his tour, in response to clamoring demand.
