I'm stuck in an Annapolis harbor on a sailboat with three others: a Republican, a Reagan Democrat, and a young woman who, whenever the gin comes out and the politics talk starts, puts on her headphones and goes to her cabin. Oh, how I envy her.
And this morning I'm sick at heart, as my friend Pat McGuire was voted out of office yesterday in favor of a Tea Party candidate, surely as part of a "throw the bums out" wave.
I'm not going to try to convince you of the injustice of it all. I just know in my shoes that this guy was an example, however rare, of what's absolutely and utterly right in government. Smart, sensitive, inquisitive, caring-about-his-constituents-to-the-point-of-doting.
And he was thrown out with the bath water by an insensate electorate.
Pass the gin, fellows. And the headphones too, please.

David,
There is no doubt that this was a mistake made by voters who were seduced by an illusory notion of some fragrant tomorrow; that notion was cynically sold to them by charlatans.
Pat McGuire is the goods. We’re all richer for knowing him and the citizens of Will County are better off for having enjoyed him as a public servant for the last four years.

That is a crying shame. Pat McGuire IS the goods. He’s a great man, and an even better “politician,” if you can even call him that.
There’s a story here: How many great, LOCAL incumbents were swept out of office across the nation due to attempt to purge all things Obama?

Nice try, but I’m not going to blame Obama for Pat’s loss. However, I’m looking for someone to blame for the climate around Washington, that’s pinning me in this Annapolis harbor.
Randall Damon says
Try the corporate oligarchy and the media monopoly that manufacture consent and brainwash the ignorant into voting against their own interests. Of course, it doesn’t help that a timid Obama sidles up to the very people who sank our economy in the first place, the The Robert Rubin acolytes Larry Summers, Tim Geithner, & Ben Bernanke.

Everything else went into storage. And quite of the few of the things that started out in that carry-on bag got mailed back to the States because I just got tired of carrying them.
