    Worse: “Like,” indeed.
Case in point: My dad passed away a month ago. I updated my status to say “Thanks everyone for all your support and love the past days, weeks and months. For those who knew him, my amazing father passed away yesterday after a long battle with lung cancer. He was a man who lived life to its fullest, and a lot of loving people will miss him.”
Then some older family members (read: people who don’t understand Facebook) “like”d my status.
Awkward. But how could/should they have known?
    Still, Worst Practices maybe.

I’m sorry to hear about your dad, Tyler. I lost my dad a year and a half ago and wrote a lot about it here. Maybe you read some of that ….
Part of the problem isn’t Facebook, it’s our cultural weirdness about death. (Studs Terkel said sex used to be the taboo subject, while death was commonplace; now it’s reversed. Death, Studs pointed out, is the new pornography.)
And so we have this kind of foolishment: When a friend told her boss that her uncle had died, the exec began to sweat, and replied, “Yeah, there’s a lot of that going around.”
