A fundraiser at Scout's school caused me to get my Huff on.

Well sir, you are braver than I. There was a parent in the drop off line ahead of me two years ago that had this bumpersticker on his gargantuan SUV: “Still Voting Democratic? You’re Stuck on Stupid” But other than that the money at the Calvert School was pretty discreet. I think a lot of it is old money and that’s why. But even if it had been as outre as yours, I doubt I would have had the guts to go public in such a way. Good for you.
I’ll refrain (being childless) from commenting on the list of auction choices.
Here’s MY question – Do you ever worry about Scout being exposed (as a result of her schoolmates being the children of these apparently “rich people”) to attitudes, lifestyles and behaviours that are far removed from the way us “normal” people live?
Don’t get me wrong here – I’ve met Scout and she seemed to me to be an absolutely delightful, intelligent, funny, and well-adjusted child. But spending too much time around people who live in this for lack of a better descriptor “rarefied” world can impact one.
How do you deal with that? Or is it just not something you’ve seen as an issue with Scout?
Yes, we worry about it (a lot). Three factors that keep us off the ledge.
Some factors:
1. Five-year-olds don’t really have crazy values. They still all like the right stuff: singing, running, and picking on one another.
2. Scout gets so much exposure to OTHER WONDERFUL PEOPLE with VERY DIFFERENT VALUES. (Kirsten, Bill Sweetland and Steve Crescenzo are only two of many people in Scout’s amazingly broad circle of friends.)
3. It’s good to know how to deal with rich people. They can be very useful in this life.
4. My general philosophy is: You’re better off trying to expose the kid to a lot of good shit than sheltering her from all the bad shit.
So generally (and so far) I’m OK. But how will I be this afternoon, when they throw Scout and I out on the street over this article???
I don’t think that will happen, but if it does I say sic Bill and Steve on them. If they don’t beg you to re-enroll Scout after about 15 minutes with those two, I’ll be shocked.
