Once and for all: Speech audiences don't love because stories are "in our DNA." (Seriously: Stories are not in human DNA, nor has it been scientifically proven nor even scientifically suggested that humans are "hard wired" for stories or for anything else.)
Speech audiences love stories because they promise to be less boring than platitudes about excellence, statistics about how many children die every six seconds and grandly expressed obviousness they grew up hearing in speeches by their school principals, suffered through during their commencements and pretended to listen to from conference keynoters.
If you have a truly new idea or something important to say, you don't really need a story.
If you don't—yeah, sure, an ice cube would be great.
