Now, you know how funny it can be to listen to President Lyndon Johnson on the Oval Office phone, even when he's just ordering pants, and specifying extra space from "where the zipper ends, back to my bunghole."
Well, you should hear LBJ when he's trying to finesse a really sensitive situation.
Like the time he called Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham to get her paper to stop writing about an advisor's sex scandal and start writing about the lazy, vacationing congressmen who wouldn't pass his legislation.
"You know the only one thing I dislike about this job is that I'm married and I can't ever get to see you, and hear that sweet voice," Johnson began a call on Dec. 2, 1963 (less than two weeks after he assumed office following the Kennedy assassination). "I'd like to break out of here and be like these young animals down on my ranch—jump the fence."
