"Hurry home," I texted to my 14-year-old daughter after school.
"Why?" she texted back, then answered her own question: "Soccer practice."
"Get your head out of the wheel well," I added, channeling my late dad, a pilot who rarely used vulgarity, but frequently used aviation terms, often telling me as I left the house for a day or for college to "keep my airspeed up."
(The wheel well is where the wheels go while the plane is in flight.)
"It was never in the wheel well," my daughter texted, in her own defense.
And I allowed myself to fondly hope that, even though I'm not a pilot, and I do like to use vulgarity, that my daughter might someday instruct her child to get his or her head out of the wheel well.
