Curmudgeons have feelings too

12.17.2009 by David Murray // 9 Comments

A guy who's promoting a conference session I'm leading refers to me as a "blogger and professional curmudgeon."

One of these days I'm going to promote a conference session he's leading and call him a "blogger and professional candy-ass dupe."

Oh please. You’re a curmudgeon and you know it. In fact, you revel in it.

I get the feeling he’s not really, but wants to fool us into thinking so. I AM a curmudgeon, and he’s not on the secret club list.

Diane, if he’s not in the curmudgeon club, he should be. David Murray is the oldest young person I know.

And the prize goes to … Diane!
It really is weird to be introduced as a curmudgeon (even though I have been since I was about 25).
Because I honestly don’t feel like one, and when R. Holland I’m the “oldest young person” he knows, I’m actually surprised to read that.
    And I worry: If I come off like an 80 year-old at 40, will I come off like a 160-year-old when I’m 80?
    I’ll be like yoda.

Robert, you must be young. David seems young to me, and I’m old. (I’m the age I should be, even if I’m forgetful and hit post twice.)

To me the issue isn’t whether or not you are a curmudgeon, David. It’s whether or not you are “professional” one. I thought you made your living as the freelancer writer/communicator guy and that being a curmudgeon was just a hobby.

David, the brand exists in the mind of the consumer. You were referred to as a professional curmudgeon. Like it or not, that is part of your brand.
I once was introduced as a “communication maverick.” I don’t feel much like a maverick in any aspect of my life, but there you go. It is what it is.
Now, you and I could do some things to rebrand ourselves, but that would take time and a team of expensive consultants. We don’t want that, do we?
Diane, I am older than David, but don’t consider myself old. Yet.

Yes, Robert, it’s hard to think of an errand more foolish than a curmudgeon trying to rebrand himself as something else.
Or as they say, “You dance with the churl that brung ya.”
