This weekend, the funeral of this fourth-generation Chicago railroader—as photographed by his beloved and profoundly devoted son, my pal Chris. Chris and his sister Julie and their brother Tim—a fifth-generation railroader, a Metra roadway engineer—all live next door to one another on a block on Chicago’s near-northwest side, on either side of Jerry’s house.

I play baseball on Sundays with Chris. Jerry used to come watch us play sometimes, and in fact he attended our last game of last year and watched his son hit the very last pitch of our season deep into the warm autumn night.
Jerry wasn’t there every Sunday, but he will be now.
