On communication, professional and otherwise.

“Blessed” stinks like guilt and superstition

04.11.2022 by David Murray // Leave a Comment

People don’t like being called “privileged,” no matter how many advantages they have, and I’ve documented the reasons why over and over again.

But then why do the same college-educated, well-connected, middle-upper-class people insist on so relentlessly saying how “blessed” they are, and how “fortunate”?

Is this some kind of humble brag?

Does it imply a guilty admission that the vast majority of other people are “not blessed” in life, and “not fortunate enough” to enjoy its perks?

Or is it just a sweaty little, fingers-crossed reverse prayer?

And blessed (or not blessed) by whom? By God? Or just by fortune?

Are they blessed enough to be fortunate, or fortunate enough to be blessed?

Or are they “humbled,” as the same sorts of people so frequently call themselves, to be so fortunate and blessed.

Whatever it is, it always sounds kind of sneaky to me.
