Yesterday I quoted W.H. Auden’s poem, “September 1, 1939.” Former Clinton White House chief speechwriter David Kusnet told me Auden is known as the “speechwriter’s poet,” and reminded me that LBJ paraphrased a line from Auden’s poem, “we must love one other or die,” in his famous ad, in 1964.
