In dozens of interviews and podcasts about the essential theory of my book, An Effort to Understand, this is what I was trying to say, as my bottom line: “People at birth are inherently good.” In her Oscar acceptance speech for best director, Nomadland director Chloe Zhao offered that translation from a classic Chinese poem and added, “I have always found goodness in the people I’ve met anywhere I’ve gone in the world.” She dedicated her award “for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold onto the goodness in themselves, and to hold onto the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that.”
