Word came last night from a trusted source that Carlos Fulcher, the paid executive director of the International Association of Business Communication, is leaving suddenly and without explanation, five months before his two-year contract is up.
IABC's volunteer chairman Dianne Chase told me this morning that the association has made 70 phone calls and counting, letting regional and chapter leaders know, via this announcement:
“After much deliberation, I have decided to step down from my role as Executive Director,” said Carlos Fulcher. “I have utmost respect for the International Executive Board and IABC. I found my two plus years with IABC to be very rewarding and filled with great accomplishments. I wish IABC and all its stakeholders the best of luck and a prosperous future.”
Great strides were made in the last couple of years advancing our financial recovery and overall sustainability as an association; as set out in our regular quarterly—and annual—reports.
Stephanie Doute, CAE, IABC’s Membership Director, is taking over as Acting Executive Director with immediate effect. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to step into this role and work with the IABC leadership and staff moving the work of the association forward to serve our members.” Doute noted. “I am humbled and excited and look forward to our continued advancement.”
For my part, I told Chase that I do not intend to cover this latest gale in IABC's stormiest decade. I have a wee communication association of my own to run, and my own members to serve. I hope my work as an association boss is better, for all I learned from my paid and unpaid investigations into IABC over the years.
IABC, Godspeed.

So the guy runs one of the two professional associations for communicators … and the best he can come up with for an out-of-the-blue resignation is a ringing No Comment? And that statement seems to have been written by a not particularly sophisticated evasiveness app, with no human input.
