The Quotable Murr: On volunteers

04.13.2016 by David Murray // Leave a Comment

"The admirable Republican George Romney believed in volunteerism as the solution to society's ills," the Murr began. "And every goddamned nonprofit board believes in volunteerism, as the solution to everything from recruiting shortages to reputation problems."

After pausing to take a drink of gin, he concluded: "Anybody who has ever worked with volunteers knows they are the utter opposite of what is needed: Whether it lasts as long as a day's fundraising car-wash or a five-year committeeship, the typical volunteer's career consists of a great initial fit of half-informed opinion and big ideas followed by a long period of silence and inaction and concluding with the expectation of a ticker-tape parade."
