What is a writer, exactly?

We writers shouldn’t read too many quotations about writers, lest we become even more confused than we already are.

But I recently stumbled across a doozy from F. Scott Fitzgerald. “Writers aren’t people exactly," he wrote. "Or, if they’re any good, they’re a whole lot of people trying so hard to be one person.”

Part of me agrees with that wholeheartedly.
