Writing Boots

On communication, professional and otherwise.

On horrible bosses (and great ones)

07.14.2011 by David Murray // 2 Comments

Horrible bosses come in many forms: cowards, tyrants, liars, imbeciles, sociopaths, insecure ciphers.

Great bosses are all the same. Like the long-ago AT&T boss Robert Holland eloquently described on his blog this week, they're the opposite of all those things: they have courage and wisdom, brains and empathy. They are Abraham Lincolns in our lives.

For a healthy career, we ought to have one of each, as early as possible.

The former to make us fully appreciate the latter. And both to encourage us to forgive every middling one in between.

I’ve had both. And I agree.

We should also all have a horrible job early in our careers, preferably in customer service, so we learn how NOT to treat people once we’ve gone a few more rungs up the ladder.
